What Is Art

By dictionary definition, art is:

the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

But even with that as the definition, people still love to call things like scribbling on a piece of paper or taping a banana to cardboard art. By definition, that would not be art. To the wallets of rich people though, it might be. I think that sparks an emotion in people. Curiosity. It makes people wonder why the artist did that and what they were thinking. There are many different types of art. To name a few categories, there’s realism, hyperrealism, surrealism, abstract, and many more. In this blog, I'm going to be focusing more on surrealism and abstract because I find those categories to be the main ones that have people questioning how legitimate it is. I'm sure you have all seen the painting: “composition red, white, blue and yellow”. If you haven't, all it is are blocks of color. To me, it doesn't mean anything. It does not invoke any emotion or make me a question. It doesn't look hard to do, but it’s still one of the most famous paintings ever. I wonder why. It makes people think. Now let's talk about surrealism. By definition, surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.

Sounds difficult right, well it is. I tried for years to figure out how I can do surrealist art and I've never been able to figure it out. Can you look at a piece of scribble and figure out what the artist was trying to convey? Sometimes it means something and sometimes it means nothing. When I make surrealist art, most of it is nonconceptual. That means it has no meaning or reason behind it. Surrealist art makes you feel something. It makes you think about something. It can even make you uncomfortable at times. It took me three of them to check off all the boxes of what real art is. but that's not definite. all of these art styles can be done “incorrectly”. they can check none of these boxes and it could still be surrealist art or they might not be considered art at all. So a scribble on a piece of paper can still be art even if it's no Mona Lisa.
